About

Funded by the Education Research Section, Project ADVISE (Analytics and Data Visualization for International Student and Education) brings alive analytics and data on international students and education to inform policymakers, researchers, and the general public.

ADVISE provides information based on rigorous academic research that utilizes big data and quantitative methodologies to answer policy-relevant questions.

In Phase 1, ADVISE provides estimates of international students’ financial contributions in the US at the national, state, and institutional level and by degree type, program, and place of origin.

The estimates are products of Dr. Mingyu Chen’s research paper “The Impact of International Students on US Colleges: Higher Education as a Service Export.

The underlying data are millions of F-1 visa SEVIS records, which contains detailed information on the program of study, cost of attendance, and funding source.

See more details about the data in the FAQ.
